Social and Environmental Justice Research Program

Their are many factors which can have an impact on a neighborhoods
livability. Older, neglected neighborhoods can be subject to a number of
these factors. The principal issue is the quality of the environment where
these neighborhoods are located. Environment quality issues can have a
negative impact on the people of the community, and this is a social justice
problem. The local residents of these older communities have a right to
clean air, water and an environment safe from toxins. Older homes often
contain toxins which were not previously recognized to be a hazard. Local
industry often left behind industrial waste which can pose a threat to these
older communities. The study of these conditions is also important to
revitalization of these older neighborhoods. The NVCDC will undertake
research to identify environmental issues in the fabric of historic homes,
properties, and in the vicinity of these neighborhoods. This research will
be shared with the local community. The NVCDC will conduct this
research for its own programs, and to aid local communities, and
developers to better understand the presence of these issues which may
have an effect of the quality of life of the local community. You can help
identify environmental issues in your community, contact the NVCDC.
