About - NVCDC
The Northern Valley Community Development Corporation (NVCDC) is a Non-profit, incorporated in West Virginia, as a charitable organization, (in 2023) to fill community needs for Social and Neighborhood Advocacy, Scientific and Historical Research, and product testing for Public Safety, as these relate to our core mission of rehabilitating neglected and threatened historic properties in these communities.
The NVCDC was founded to address the fragile condition of the endangered Historic homes in the neighborhoods of the small communities of the Steel Valley area of the Northern Ohio River Valley. The homes were built to support the housing needs of the people who created the once thriving steel industry in the valley during the turn of the 20th century.
Most are of the American Four-Square plan, many have elements of the Queen Anne and Craftsman styles, and define the architectural style of the neighborhoods where they stand. These homes are an important Cultural Resource in the local communities, and are in danger of disappearing due to neglect, and lack of proper maintenance.
Many of these historic homes have been divided into multiple small rental units, have had their important architectural elements compromised or removed, and unfortunately, many now stand vacant and are in danger of being demolished by local governments as a public nuisance. These historic structures are not a nuisance, they are an important part of the cultural and historic fabric in this area, and are deserving of the care and investment necessary to restore them to their original grandeur.
Saving these historic homes will also be essential to revitalizing the neighborhoods and provided needed housing opportunities where they stand. This effort can only be addressed through the efforts of a non-profit organization, its volunteers, and public support.
